Armed with bags, gloves, litter pickers and a strong sense of purpose, Brentwood Liberal Democrats got to work cleaning Brentwood's streets and green spaces as part of a Brentwood's litter picking initiative.
Nobody could doubt the selfless dedication of those who took part, we hope that we have made difference to those areas.
Brentwood's Conservative Borough councillors recently voted for Brentwood to become a member of the Association of South Essex Local Authorities (ASLEA) Joint Committee. ASLEA consists of seven Councils, Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Rochford, Southend on Sea, Thurrock and Essex County Council. The decision was made during a heated debate at Brentwood's Ordinary Council meeting on (28/7) when Lib Dem councillors raised a number of key issues and highlighted the Tories failure to consult with Brentwood residents on such an important decision
Following the announcement by the Conservative administration that our Chief Executive is to take up a joint role as Chief Executive of both Brentwood and Rochford Councils, the Tories say this will present a saving to Brentwood as Rochford will be paying half his salary. We say Brentwood has been in a similar position before. It didn't work then, and it will not work now.
Message from County Councillor Barry Aspinell re Ongar Road Closure
Following being alerted to this problem by Mr. Woodcock, I contacted ECC Highways as I have received no notification of the major road closure and route diversion. Apparently, an automated website notification was sent to me on Wednesday, but unfortunately it never reached its destination!
The elections this week didn't produce the set of results we wanted.
Our local election campaigns, as always, have been strongly influenced by National news and media coverage. The effect and handling of Covid-19 and Brexit matters has not been straight forward, and it is very clear that many Conservative voters have decided to stay loyal. On the doorsteps across Brentwood many people expressed to having major concerns about the Prime Minister and the way his government have handled events and how ministers have conducted themselves. We also picked up that there are a very large number of local people who are very dissatisfied with the Conservatives at a local level. However, we as well as the Labour and Green Parties, have not managed to persuade enough of them to vote for one of us, or even vote at all. It is critical that there is a strong opposition voice to ensure that the Conservatives manage responsibly rather than the cavalier and uncaring way we regularly and increasingly see.
Brentwood Conservatives released their manifesto yesterday. A manifesto setting out the actions they will take if elected. I thought it was worth a read and recording some thoughts that I have.
My review the document can be broadly split into five headings.
1 - Deafening silence on certain matters
A resident in Brentwood South, living near Running Waters, contacted Liberal Democrats candidate Brenner Munden to report broken paving slabs on the Running Waters footpath.
Brenner went down to the footpath straight away and what he found were broken and/or raised slabs. It became clear that this was incredibly dangerous as it would be easy for anyone to trip up the raised slabs or step and fall on a cracked and moving piece of concrete. Many elderly residents that use this footpath were unnecessarily taking a risk by walking down the path and potentially falling and hurting themselves because of the path defects. But it soon became clear how impossible it would be pushing a pram or using a wheelchair down the path without get stuck or causing damage.
Previously when asked why I vote, my response has always been along the lines of 'well if you don't vote you don't have a right to complain when things go wrong.' This strikes me now as a very negative way of looking at voting. My revised answer is that by voting in the election you can support a candidate who will represent your views and can influence the policy issues you care about. An election is also your chance to speak out if you have a complaint about the way the Parish/Borough/District/Country is being run. Voting is not the only way to participate but it's the quickest and easiest way. If you don't vote, you'll have had no say over who will be making decisions on the issues important to you.
