Brentwood & Ongar's Parliamentary Spokesman Cllr David Kendall has welcomed the new policy document launched this week by party Leader Nick Clegg called a "Fresh Start for Britain".

This important document outlines the principles on which the Liberal Democrats will build their General Election manifesto.

Key highlights are as follows:

On Tax: We are determined to cut taxes for people on lower and middle incomes. But to make sure these cuts are affordable we will pay for them by making polluters and the very well off pay their fair share.

On Spending: We will ensure that any new spending will be paid for by a specific cut from elsewhere so that it is deliverable even in these tough economic times. Liberal Democrats will be making significant pledges to improve public services but we need to be realistic about where the money comes from.

One way we can save money is by slimming down the bureaucracy, databases and agencies of Labour's centralised command and control state. Another is by scrapping the hugely expensive like for like replacement of Trident that we no longer need.

It is only by having courage in these big, long term decisions that governments will be able to bring down the deficit and build a fairer Britain. One where society is fair, the economy is green, and we have a new politics that shifts power to the people.
