Brentwood's Liberal Democrats wish to send their sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and families of those involved in a tragic road accident in Ashwells Road this morning. A pair of horses and riders were hit by a car and the female rider and both horses, sadly, have died. The male horse rider is in hospital whilst the driver of a van has been arrested for causing death by careless driving.

Essex Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Pilgrims Hatch councillor Vicky Davies, who rushed to the scene after being called by a distressed local resident, said:

"Naturally, our deepest sympathy and concerns go to those involved and affected by this incident. It is such a tragic start to the new year for a local family and a dreadful waste of lives.

"As local councillors I assure residents that we will demand a full investigation is carried as to what road safety measures can be implemented on this country road that is used daily by horse riders and dog walkers.

"Today has shown us some measures must be taken to reduce the risk to all road users ,riders and pedestrians. Local residents are only too aware of the speeding traffic and the dangers it presents to their families. It is incredible that narrow rural lanes are not the subject of speed restrictions. Thankfully, most local drivers drive with caution but excessive speed and careless driving in such lanes is dangerous as today's awful accident has demonstrated."
