Tories to close Brentwood Library on Sundays

Conservative-controlled Essex County Council has started a consultation on the future of Essex Libraries - with no choice in whether the facility closes on Sundays.

Cllr Karen Chilvers, Brentwood West, said:

"Libraries are a vital part of the community and yet the Tories' consultation offers just two choices to Brentwood residents and both include Sunday closure. This decision, made by a Tory cabinet member from Colchester is just another example of the lip service paid to consultation by the ruling group. The consultation only asks this one question and gives no room for comment or other alternatives and that is not acceptable as a consultation.

Karen Chilvers

"So many people rely on the library for books, reference, entertainment and internet access that it is increduous to think that the last library in the borough that is currently open on Sunday could soon be shutting it's doors on the day of the week that people have the time to use it."

The two options are:

Option A

Monday & Tuesday: 9am - 7pm, Closed Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 9am - 7pm, Saturday: 9am - 5pm, Sunday CLOSED

Option B

Monday - Saturday: 9am - 5pm, Sunday CLOSED

"If we want to keep the library open on a Sunday, we need to start borrowing books."
