Liberal Democrats have today welcomed a petition by the End Violence Against Women Coalition and the Everyday Sexism Project calling for compulsory sex and relationship education in schools.

In August Liberal Democrats announced manifesto plans to give children in state schools compulsory age-appropriate sex and relationship education.

Welcoming today's news Liberal Democrat Minister for Women and Equalities Jo Swinson said:

"Educating young people about sex and relationships in an age-appropriate way is one of the best ways we can protect them from abuse.

"We welcome the petition started by End Violence Against Women and the Everyday Sexism Project which calls on sex and relationship education (SRE) to be compulsory in schools.

"It is vitally important that young people learn all the life skills they need when they are at school, and Liberal Democrats believe that should include age-appropriate sex and relationship education. That is why we will include a promise to introduce age-appropriate SRE in our next manifesto."
