Liberal Democrat health minister Norman Lamb has welcomed moves by the police and NHS services in the West Midlands to improve mental health care.

The police force and NHS have signed a declaration to improve mental health crisis care and make the use of police cells for people with mental health issues, a thing of the past.

In the last financial year, there was a 90 per cent reduction in the use of police cells in the region.

Norman said:

"People with mental distress need urgent, compassionate care. I want every area to be as ambitious as the West Midlands in their efforts to prioritise mental health and improve crisis care.

"It is fantastic that the area is also signing a crisis care declaration today I've asked every area to do the same by the end of this year.

"By working together to give compassionate care in a safe place, we will help those living through their darkest hours to recover - and even save lives."
