Calling for Female Councillor Candidates in Brentwood
We are actively seeking women candidates for the 2021 council elections. Currently, four of our thirteen borough councillors are female (Karen Chilvers, Sarah Cloke, Vicky Davies and Alison Fulcher) and we aim to increase that next year when there are 12 borough seats up for election plus 4 county seats where there are 2 candidate vacancies.
To be a great councillor you need to have drive, enthusiasm, an interest in your local community and the confidence to speak up for others. We will, of course, offer training, mentoring and encouragement. You would be expected to take part in activity in your ward and attend evening council meetings. There is an allowance payment to cover expenses, if elected, of £6,000pa. This is subject to tax and national insurance but does not affect Universal Credit.
Of course, there's hard work involved to get to that point and you will need to set time aside to campaign for your seat by delivering leaflets, speaking to residents and promoting Liberal Democrat policies. You will also need to be happy appearing in photos and setting out your reasons for wanting to be a councillor.
Being a councillor is hard work but incredibly rewarding when you get results for local residents - perhaps helping someone to get suitably homed - or for your local community - things like getting a safe crossing place or play area installed - and you will find a supportive team working with you. If you are interested, we would be delighted to hear from you and, even if standing isn't something you want to do right now, there's plenty of other ways you can get involved.
In order to stand for council, you must either be registered to vote, live, work or own property in the borough of Brentwood and, of course, be a member of the Liberal Democrats (subscription rates start from £12pa - join here). Potential candidates should contact us on info@brentwoodlibdems.org.uk for an informal chat.
