Closure of the Post Office on Shenfield Broadway
Councillor David Worsfold comments on the proposed closure of Morrisons in Shenfield and the associated closure of the Post Office on Shenfield Broadway on behalf of himself and Councillor Nicky Cuthbert.
Councillor Worsfold said: "The news that Shenfield will lose its Post Office with the closure of Morrisons is a significant blow to residents and businesses in the town."
He added: "I am disappointed but was not surprised to hear that, despite the best efforts of the staff, Morrisons is shutting down as the store has never looked busy since it took over the former newsagents.
"To take the Post Office down with them is appalling," he added.
"Two years ago, we lost our last bank when Barclays pulled out, reneging on the ‘last bank standing’ deal among the major banks.
"As they left, they pointed across the road to the Post Office, saying that would meet the needs of residents and businesses. Now, we won’t even have that," he added.
He appreciated proposals for a community banking hub in Shenfield, saying, "I welcome the news that Council officers are already working with local businesses to see how and if a community hub could deliver banking services, and they have my full backing."
Commenting on the current consultation by the Post Office over providing local postal services, he said: "The Shenfield Post Office is often busy with long queues, so we know it is required."
"Anyone who has used the Brentwood branch knows it will not cope with many more additional customers."
A copy of the consultation is available in the comments. Residents can use the Post Office in the town centre in Brentwood from Sunday 13th April onwards.
Alternative locations are available in Hutton, at Woodland Avenue and Rayleigh Road.
