Brentwood and Ongar Liberal Democrats have expressed concern regarding the type of phone mast applications received within the Borough and the lack of supporting information submitted by mobile phone companies to give weight to their claims.

Brentwood North Councillor Ross Carter has formally asked planning officers to ensure that mobile phone companies submit supporting information regarding signal strength in the areas surrounding proposed application sites.

The proposal - made at Brentwood Council's Planning Committee on 28th June - follows a recent spate of controversial mobile phone applications in contentious locations, such as Mayfield Gardens in Brentwood, Woodway in Hutton, and opposite the Albert Street junction in Warley.

Liberal Democrats propose that:

  • For all mobile phone applications planning officers request information from the applicants demonstrating signal strength in the local area to support any application
Albert Road, Warley Hill, Warley
Albert Road, Warley Hill, Warley

Cllr Carter stated "We are seeing a clear increase of inappropriate applications for mobile phone masts in our borough. Recent applications at Mayfield Gardens and at Woodway were literally metres from residential properties. We know that mobile phone use is on the rise, but residents are already reporting strong signal in areas where phone companies are making these applications. By making it crystal clear we need this type of information we will not only be in a stronger position to support residents affected by such proposals".

Cllr Carter is supported in his call by Warley County Councillor David Kendall, who represents the Warley Hill area, and by Shenfield County Councillor Barry Aspinell, who represents part of the Woodway area.
