Revised plans to part pedestrianise Crown Street got unanimous support at last night's Highways Panel meeting and will now go out to consultation with shops, businesses and local residents in the area.

Barring any major issues it is hoped the scheme will be installed during the first half of 2012. The revised plans were worked up during a cross-party site visit by County Cllr David Kendall with other councillors, county council officers and in consultation with some of the shopkeepers.

David said:

"I am delighted we were able to achieve cross party agreement for the revised plans and look forward to seeing the part pedestrianisation finally happen. I believe the new scheme will not only make Crown Street safer particualrly for families with children but will also make it an even nicer environment to shop".

Cllr Nigel Clarke, who has a business in Crown Street, said:

"This project has always been about making this a safer area for people to shop in and I will be delighted when it happens."
