Update on Lidl and Wates Way site

27 Jan 2025

After meeting residents near Wates Way, Brentwood North Councillors want to clear up any confusion regarding Lidl's intentions regarding the former business park.

Lidl applied for planning permission in August 2020 to demolish existing structures and build a food store and houses. Brentwood Borough Council rejected this in December 2021 due to concerns about highway efficiency, safety, air quality, and access viability. Lidl appealed, and their appeal was upheld in February 2023, granting them planning permission to meet certain conditions before starting work.

Despite the appeal process affecting the relationship, constructive dialogue has resumed to minimise future impact on residents. Lidl is preparing the site and planning to begin construction in 2025. They are also addressing site maintenance issues following a request from Cllr Steve Mayo, as described below.

We fully agree with the residents we spoke to who branded the site as an eye-sore and noted the prevalence of creeping vegetation onto surrounding pavements.  In response, Cllr Mayo met with a Lidl representative on-site to request a prompt tidy-up of the site exterior and agreed to a plan to maintain this while the project progresses. This was positively received. We will continue to monitor and raise issues as appropriate.

Residents have noticed recent site activity for maintenance and trespass prevention. No building demolition has started yet. Any future actions will comply with building controls, mainly for asbestos risks. Lidl is also coordinating road plans with Essex Highways.
