Do you want to see our Town Hall demolished?
Many residents have been shocked to hear of the decision made by the Tory administration running Brentwood Council to either demolish ALL the Town Hall of 87% of it. The building is the borough's most valuable asset and has been a major landmark in the town since it was opened by HM The Queen in 1953.
Cllr Barry Aspinell, Deputy Leader of Brentwood Lib Dems, said:
"When the matter was discussed by councillors the Lib Dem group called for the existing Town Hall to be saved with a major programme of refurbishment and the completion of necessary works to the door, boiler, electrics and windows to bring them up to a good standard. Sadly our call was rejected by the Tories and they decided to move forward with theit two options on the Town Hall site. One option is for a brand new Town Hall and the other option is for a new build, incorporating just 13% of the current Town Hall."
"We believe the Tories are wrong to demolish the Town Hall and sell the land, particularly at a time when the economic environment and property values are so unstable. If the Town Hall was your house you would repair and refurbish it long before you considered knocking it down. When the Town Hall extension was completed back in the 1990s costs rocketed out of control and we believe the same thing could easily happen again if either of the new build options go ahead.
"Is that what YOU want to happen with YOUR money?"
