David Kendall, parliamentary candidate for Brentwood & Ongar, says a shock result could be on the cards given the results from their canvassing returns.

Many residents, whilst desperately wanting change, are not happy that Conservative Eric Pickles is spending so much of his time performing his duties as Tory party Chairman - he is even spending the election campaign reporting from Tory Party HQ. Residents have said they want an MP for Brentwood & Ongar who will focus all their time and energy on working for local people. Many are now turning to David Kendall as they feel that is what they will get with the Liberal Democrat candidate.

Neither have residents forgotten Eric Pickles appearance on Question Time last March when he defended his need for a second home on the basis that he needed to be at work at 9.30am (see our home page to watch the clip).

As the date of the General Election was announced today as Thursday 6th May, David Kendall said:

"The Liberal Democrats came a strong second here at the last General Election and our canvass returns clearly show a really positive shift in support to the Liberal Democrats.

"As a local person who has lived in Brentwood for the last 20 years, I have got to know many people through my work as a councillor, campaigner and small businessman. Residents have told me they want a full time MP focused solely on getting the best for Brentwood & Ongar residents.

"It would seem that Eric Pickles famous claim that he is "working round the clock for Brentwood & Ongar" is starting to sound very hollow given the amount of time he spends campaigning all around the country and not in his constituency. At the 1992 General Election the Liberal Democrats secured an historic win in Bath when Don Foster toppled the then Tory party Chairman Chris Patten. The same thing could easily happen here."

The Liberal Democrats will be fighting this election calling for real change and a fair deal. A vote for the Liberal Democrats will be a vote to cut taxes for those on low and middle incomes, give all our children a fair start in life, create green jobs and bring in big reforms to clean up politics.
