Brentwood's Liberal Democrats are celebrating a 6.4% swing to the party in the Hutton South by-election, the Conservatives' safest seat in the borough.

As expected, the Tories held the seat but with a much reduced majority (487 compared to 724 in May this year).

Cllr David Kendall, Leader of Brentwood's Lib Dem group said:

"We knew we were with faced a difficult fight in such a strong Tory ward but we were delighted with a 6.4% swing to us from the other parties (5.1% from the Conservatives), very pleased with the campaign we fought and know that residents were impressed by calibre of our candidate, Linda Price."

The results were:

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT - LINDA PRICE: 199 (+6.4%)

Conservative 686 (-5.1%)

Labour: 50 (-1.3%)
