Karen Chilvers announced as snap General Election candidate
Cllr Karen Chilvers will be our candidate to fight the Snap General Election in Brentwood & Ongar on 8th June.
Karen, 46, has lived in Brentwood for 25 years and has served as councillor for Brentwood West since 2007. She is a children's author and marketing consultant with a reputation for standing up for residents in her council ward, especially the most vulnerable. She has also been a disability rights campaigner since becoming disabled herself in recent years and strongly believes in equal rights.
Karen said:
"I dearly want to represent the people of my home constituency in parliament and that is why I am standing here - to be your voice in parliament. People may regard this as a safe Tory seat but, with thousands joining the Liberal Democrats and thousands more - from all parties - set to vote for us there could be a number of upsets and this could be one of them.
"I have watched in horror as Theresa May's Conservative government has constantly crushed the most vulnerable in society whilst giving a helping hand to the richest in society. I want a fair, open and tolerant society. That includes fighting for a second referendum on the terms of a Brexit deal. Almost half the population voted against leaving the EU and I was amongst them. We were lied to by the Leave side and no one said we would be leaving the single market. So I want to make sure we get a say on the actual terms, not the fantasy "£350 million a week for the NHS" nonsense that duped so many."
"Locally, for Brentwood, Shenfield, Ingatestone and Ongar centres we need sustainable and sensible plans to keep our towns in business and attract new customers. With my background in marketing and retail I can use my expertise to make this happen.
"I am pleased to unite behind Tim Farron, whose leadership campaign team I was on in 2015, as he challenges this government and the weak Labour opposition that is holding their hand."
