Cllrs David Kendall and Barry Aspinell, with Barry's son Mathew, took direct action over the garden of an disabled elderly lady in Pilgrims Hatch.

With a two year wait for this work to be done by Conservative-controlled Brentwood Borough Council, Barry, David and Mathew decided to do the work themselves and spend a day cutting back shrubs and tidying the area.

The resident's grateful son thanked the team, saying:

"On behalf of our family and my mother, I would like to thank you as local Pilgrims Hatch councillors for the work you have completed clearing overgrown trees and bushes on council land outside her property.

"It is a sign of the decline of social responsibility when a disabled elderly lady is told by her local authority that she will have to wait two years or pay herself to have overgrown council owned trees and plants dealt with.

"Your dedication as councillors to the Pilgrims Hatch area can only be measured by the outstanding efforts that you make for your ward and the people in your communities should consider themselves lucky to have such dedicated people representing them."
