Brentwood's Liberal Democrats were delighted to see approval for an Environmental Award Scheme at November's Environmental Panel.

There will be two awards, one for commercial/business organisations and one for community, schools and voluntary organisations.

Lib Dem Cllr Karen Chilvers, who suggested such a scheme at October's full council meeting, said:

"Over the last couple of months, there has been a lot of press coverage about businesses who are not pulling their weight, environmentally, and are responsible for litter and subsequent rat problems. However, it's important to consider both sides of the story and recognise that there are many businesses that are making a significant contribution to Brentwood through vigorous recycling, ensuring that their premises are kept tidy and setting an example to others.

"It is those businesses that deserve to be publicly rewarded for their efforts."

Cllr Chilvers will form part of the judging panel.
