Essex County Council today agreed to take forward a Liberal Democrat initiative which allows councils to generate renewable energy which can be sold on to the National Grid.

"The relaxation of controls by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change gives Essex County Council the opportunity to be a community leader in the carbon reduction and renewable energy agenda", said County Councillor David Kendall, Member for Brentwood South.

"This is a big step forward for the Council" said Councillor Kendall, after receiving assurances from the Cabinet Member that the sale of renewable energy to the National Grid would be part of that review.

The Council will now review its current performance with a report back in three months.
