Local Lib Dems call for the reinstatement of Brentwood Police Station
Liberal Democrat councillors on Brentwood Borough Council moved a motion demanding the reinstatement of a fully operational Police Station including a custody suite in Brentwood at the Ordinary Council meeting on Wednesday 8th December.
Sadly the motion was voted down by the Conservative councillors running Brentwood but the Lib Dem group intend to keep up the pressure and continue their call for action to be taken.
The recent high profile cases of violent crime in the Borough have been well documented in the press both locally and nationally. Many residents are rightly concerned about police visibility during the day and the evening and the fact that Brentwood is in a vulnerable position particularly given it's proximity to the M25 together with the direct road and rail links to London.
The Local Lib Dems believe that the distances between the current operational Police Stations for this Borough of Grays and Harlow are simply too far away to ensure the safety and security of our residents.
Lib Dem Leader Cllr Barry Aspinell who moved the motion said "Many Brentwood residents want to see more Police visibility on our streets particularly at night and at weekends. Brentwood Police Station was sold for development for £8 million. How much of that money has been invested back into frontline policing in our Borough? I would suggest very little. Some of that money could easily be used to provide a fully operational Police Station"
Cllr David Kendall seconding the motion said "The Tories used to say they were the party of Law & Order but that myth was shattered many years ago with all the cuts they made in national and local policing and the closure of our Police Station. They are now trying to play catch up by recruiting more officers but it's too little too late. It's very sad to see the Tories failing to act on resident's concerns by voting against our call for action".
