Cllr Nigel Clarke has been elected as Chair of Brentwood & Ongar Liberal Democrats after his ward colleague, Cllr Karen Chilvers, completed her full three year term in charge of the local party.

Cllr Clarke said:

"Karen has achieved her aim of moving the party into a strong position and leaves the role with a 30% increase in membership, more councillors than we had three years ago, a happier and supportive team of activists and a strong reputation across the Liberal Democrat party nationally and we all have a lot to thank her for."

"We now move into important elections in May 2011, with the council elections and the Fairer Votes Referendum and I relish the challenge of continuing to move the party forward with my newly elected Deputy Chair, Cllr Ross Carter, new Treasurer Charlie Green and party secretary Linda Price."

"In Brentwood and Essex we are the main opposition party and we punch well above our weight as we fight the Conservatives locally to get the best for our residents. There is NO coalition locally and we continue to put our residents first."
