Cross Party Statement on Brentwood's One Hour Parking

Councillors from across all three opposition parties and the independent councillor successfully worked together to bring about the return of the 1 hour parking charge that the Conservatives abolished in February this year.

After successful opposition lead campaigns against the 117% hike in parking charges at local car parks such as William Hunter Way a formal motion was submitted to return the 1 hour charge to the Borough's car parks. It is a move that is one to both support local traders and businesses in Brentwood and encouraging people to park and visit our local shops.

The current ruling Conservative administration were split on the evening, having seen their Vice-Chair walk out of the meeting before the vote took place, with three abstentions and three opposing the move which against a united opposition and 4 votes from them in support, seeking the best solution for our Borough the motion was passed and six months of campaigning with local residents has forced the administration into a wise U turn.

We will now be working with Council officers towards the successful reintroduction of this one hour charging period.

"I am glad to see our petition had the desired effect and It is indeed wonderful to see opposition councillors working together cross-party against this inept and incompetent Tory administration to achieve the result that our residents and local businesses want and need. We are all in this to represent our residents and I hope the Conservatives honour this decision and introduce the one hour charge without delay."

Cllr Barry Aspinell, Liberal Democrat Group Leader

"From a campaign we began in February of this year I am delighted that the work of my Brentwood First and opposition party colleagues has resulted in this victory for local businesses, residents and democracy. This is further proof that when party politics is set aside the right result for Brentwood can always be achieved"

Cllr William Lloyd, Brentwood First Group Leader

"The Tories have got it wrong again regarding parking charges so it is great to see that opposition councillors from all parties can work together and get the best for Brentwood in this way"

Cllr Mike Le-Surf, Labour Group Leader
