Rail Strike called off

Brentwood Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that the first national rail strike for 16 years has been called off after a High Court injunction blocked the walkout by 6,000 signalman.

It followed allegations of an illegal ballot involving "scores of inaccuracies and deficiencies" including voting papers being sent to up to 300 phantom members.

The four day strike by the Rail Maritime and Transport Union was due to take place from Tuesday next week, the day after the bank Holiday.

Of the dispute, Lib Dem Leader Cllr David Kendall said:

"I am totally opposed to the union taking strike action because it will cause misery and suffering to millions of rail users particularly in places like Brentwood where many people are totally reliant on the train to get to work.

"I want to see both sides get together and have meaningful discussions on how they can resolve this dispute because the last thing anyone wants to see is a strike."
