School School Crossings: the truth emerges

Tory-controlled Essex County Council has confirmed that it will NOT replace Lollipop men & ladies as they leave or retire - perhaps explaining why they are so reluctant to agree to a Lib Dem request to discuss the issue.

The Brentwood Gazette reported today that a lollipop lady who retired in October after 19 years will not be replaced, leaving children at Long Ridings and Shenfield High School vulnerable on their school journeys.

County Cllr Barry Aspinell, Brentwood North, said:

"We urge all local people to unite behind this campaign to get this discussed at full council with the simple objective of making school journeys across Essex as safe as possible for our children.

"This news perhaps demonstrates why there was a reluctance to debate this issue when the strategy the Tories are employing actually makes school crossings more dangerous.

The Liberal Democrats were, earlier this year, successful in keeping the school crossing patrol at St Peter's School in South Weald.
