Cllr James Sapwell, Brentwood North, has expressed his sorrow at the death of Ernie Clarke MBE, founder of Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, and vowed to do all he can to ensure a positive future for the organisation.

After meeting with singing sensation, animal lover and patron Leona Lewis on Monday the day after Ernie passed away, Cllr Sapwell said:

"Hopefield is a special place - a jewel in Brentwood's crown - started by the extremely dedicated Ernie and Paula Clarke in 1983. They are both sadly missed but, along with the special people that want to carry on their hard work for these animals I will do all I can to see that it is still there in years to come.

"I was so pleased that Leona Lewis showed such a commitment to the sanctuary and the animals - the meeting we had with her was productive. Cllr Phil Mynott and I look forward to meeting her again in a couple of week's time so we can look at a strategy to ensure its future."

James is asking anyone with ideas on how to raise funds for Hopefield to email him at james.sapwell@brentwood.gov.uk or tweet him @jsapwell.

"And, whilst you have your phone handy, you can text Text HAST11 £3 to 70070 to donate to Hopefield too."
