Shenfield: Lib Dem parking success

Brentwood Liberal Democrats' campaign to give Brentwood shoppers more flexible parking claimed another success.

The Conservative administration yielded to political and public pressure, changing one of their parking motions at the last possible moment. As a result, visitors to Shenfield's car parks will be able to choose to park for up to 30 minutes for only 40p, rather than having to pay at least £1.30 as at present. This change will be brought in "as soon as possible" and we hope within the next three months.

Although this is good news for Shenfield, the campaign to reintroduce one hour parking across Brentwood did not have the same success. Following the vote won by opposition councillors in Augst, officers have, rather than being instructed to fulfill the decision as is usual, been instructed to gather more data to see if it works financially. At best, this means the change can't be brought in until April 2014.

Opposition councillors won the one hour charge vote, but the Tories are delaying

Shenfield councillor and deputy leader Cllr Graeme Clark said:

"It was a mixed result, I am delighted to get the half hour charge in Shenfield agreed but cannot understand why the Tories wish to delay the re-introduction of the one hour charge in Brentwood."
