It has been announced today that the 2012 Olympic Games Mountain Biking event is to be moved from Brentwood.

The London Organising Committee has been instructed to find an alternative venue, because they feel that Weald Park would not prove challenging enough for Olympic standard riders.

Cllr David Kendall, Liberal Democrat Group Leader said:

"This decision is a disgrace and a major blow to our community. A lot of time, energy and effort has already gone in to making sure Brentwood was ready to hold the Olympic Mountain Bike event and to be told now that it is not happening is unbelievable.

"The Olympics were going to bring a lot of benefits to our town including major improvements to Brentwood station, new cycleways and possible junction improvements. These could all now be lost following this news.

"We still want to see the mountain bike event come to Essex and hope that when the new venue is finalised Brentwood will still be able to benefit from the event."
