Common sense prevailed last night as the application for a seven storey, 71 dwelling apartment block in St James Road near Brentwood station was refused permission on the grounds of unacceptable living conditions, unacceptable effect on the street scene and loss of an employment site.

Cllr Karen Chilvers who, with hundreds of local residents, campaigned against the development said:

"I was delighted to see the application up for refusal and even more delighted when the committee unanimously voted for it to be refused last night."

"Residents around the site worked hard and campaigned effectively to ensure that this was turned down and they should be very proud of what they have done."
