Statement: David Bishop's resignation

6 May 2014

As widely reported in the media, locally and nationally, a Conservative candidate in Brentwood has resigned from his party for making racist and homophonic comments on twitter. However, it is too late for him to withdraw as a candidate for the elections on 22nd May 2014 and his name will still appear on the ballot paper in Brentwood South ward.

The Liberal Democrats in Brentwood are shocked and appalled at the comments posted online by the former Conservative candidate for Brentwood South. There is no place for racism and homophobia in our society and we welcome his resignation. However, we have concerns that David Bishop will still be listed as the Conservative candidate on the ballot paper and therefore call on the Conservatives to ensure that all Brentwood South residents are aware of the following:

  • They are aware of the comments made by David Bishop.
  • That he has resigned from the Conservative party
  • That he is no longer the Conservative candidate in Brentwood South although his name is still on the ballot paper.
  • They urge people not to vote for him.
  • They issue an apology for his appalling behaviour

Cllr James Sapwell

Chair, Brentwood and Ongar Liberal Democrats
