The seeds of time spell the end for Brentwood's last public cricket pitch.

Councillors agreed to stop maintaining the fine turf area at Warley Playing Fields, in The Drive, on Wednesday.

The ruling Tory group was told the pitch is never used.

Lib Dem leader David Kendall called for sport groups to come forward to force a re-think.

He said: "Many sections of our community may have been unaware the cricket square is available for hire."

A council spokesman said Mr Kendall's comments had been noted.
