Conservative councillors Chris Hossack and Cliff Poppy have, today, resigned from their positions as Chair and Vice-chair of the Community, Health and Housing Committee. They cited the lack of information available to them to scrutinise the housing service as one of the reasons for their actions.

Cllr Barry Aspinell, Leader of the Lib Dem group said:

"I can't say I am surprised to see the two councillors run away from their roles. It shows that the local Tories are finding it difficult to deal with the constant draconian cuts their own government is making to local councils and the fallout from Universal Credit that is making it hard for some to even feed their families or meet their rent. We are also aware of some issues with services offered to residents and the planned 20% increase in emergency alarm services."

"I think it is fair to say that all is not well in the Tory camp in Brentwood - if the chair and vice-chair of a committee can't access the information they need to do their jobs then something is going spectacularly wrong and it will be the most vulnerable amongst us that will suffer the most."
