Last month I wrote about the case of Ella Kissi-Debrah and the fact that a South London coroner's court was holding an inquest into the death of the nine-year-old. As a reminder this was a potential landmark legal case, a coroner was being asked to rule that air pollution caused the death from an acute asthma attack. This finding would make legal history. It has never been identified as a cause of death before in the UK and this is thought to be the first case of its kind in the world. Lewisham Council, the mayor of London and government gave evidence about their knowledge of the levels of toxic air around where Ella lived, the health impacts and what was being done to reduce the pollution. Prior to the inquest It had been decided that article 2 - the right to life - of the Human Rights Act, which scrutinises the role of public bodies in a person's death, apply to the hearing.
Lib Dem councillors David Kendall (Brentwood South County Divison) and Karen Chilvers (Brentwood West ward) have acted on information and appeals from Brentwood residents to try to improve the dog waste issues in our country parks and in the town centre.
We are pleased to assist Brentwood Mutual Aid in finding volunteers to help facilitate the vaccination programme.
Many residents have been in touch about the mobile phone reception in the station area. Officers at the council have done all they are able to do and, in fact, it is entirely due to the mobile phone providers that the reception has gone down. They had almost two years to prepare and failed.
We are actively seeking women candidates for the 2021 council elections. Currently, four of our thirteen borough councillors are female (Karen Chilvers, Sarah Cloke, Vicky Davies and Alison Fulcher) and we aim to increase that next year when there are 12 borough seats up for election plus 4 county seats where there are 2 candidate vacancies. To be a great councillor you need to have drive, enthusiasm, an interest in your local community and the confidence to speak up for others. We will, of course, offer training, mentoring and encouragement. You would be expected to take part in activity in your ward and attend evening council meetings. There is an allowance payment to cover expenses, if elected, of £6,000pa. This is subject to tax and national insurance but does not affect Universal Credit. Of course, there's hard work involved to get to that point and you will need to set time aside to campaign for your seat by delivering leaflets, speaking to residents and promoting Liberal Democrat policies.
